Ankle Pain
What is Ankle Pain?
The ankle joint is formed by the articulation of the talus, tibia, and fibula bones. Surrounding this area are several ligaments, tendons and muscle tissue that provide support to the ankle. These structures permit adaptability for the ankle to tolerate a variety of different surfaces and associated forces during movement. When it comes to pain around this region, it is important to consider the initial mechanism of injury, immediate symptoms after (swelling, bruising, discoloration), alongside the ability to weight-bear through the particular side. This will help identify the nature, degree and structure involved in injury to determine the best course of action for management.
What to expect
Common injuries that occur through repetition, trauma or excessive loading through the ankle are ligament sprains. This happens when the ligament tissue is excessively stretched or perhaps even is torn. Naturally this results in pain and restriction to movement, preventing sporting activities to even limiting the ability to walk. At Elements, our physiotherapists have experience in both identifying and treating these types of injuries. Within your first session, our clinicians will complete a detailed assessment to determine what is causing your pain – considering all possibilities from ligament sprains to issues with nerves, tendons, joint impingement to arthritis. Once the problem is identified, our physiotherapy team will rehabilitate the ankle in accordance with your needs. This can include: taping, tailored exercise programmes, massage, manual therapy, shockwave and/or acupuncture.
