Elderly Joint Care
What is Elderly Joint Care?
As we get older there can be changes that occur to the body that can predispose us to developing joint related pain. A common cause of this pain is ‘osteoarthritis’ – a condition that often includes: thinning of cartilage, ligament degeneration, reduction of joint space and bony growths along the joint line. Osteoarthritis is not exclusive to a particular joint, however common areas for development tend to be the knees, hips and back. This may be down to the weight- baring nature of these joints during everyday mobility.
What to expect
In order to diagnose this type of pain, it is important to consider the presentation of your symptoms along with the findings of a physical examination. Signs may include stiffness in the morning when waking, along with pain with prolonged use or repetitive movement. This can be accompanied with visual signs of swelling, bony prominences and pain when pressing into the joint. At Elements physiotherapy, our physiotherapists can provide detailed assessments to help determine the route cause of your joint pain. This will include thorough questioning of your history and medical background, along with examination of your joints to help identify conditions like osteoarthritis.
