What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition that typically presents as shooting pain down the back of the leg that can be accompanied with pins and needles and/or numbness. Symptoms can arise as a result of related tension or even compression to the nerve roots that exit the base of the spine. Like elsewhere in the back, pain arises generally due to an element of change that can include: intervertebral disc bulges, degenerative changes, nerve root irritation inflammation or a combination.

What to expect

At Elements physiotherapy our goal is to take a patient centered approach when it comes to both assessment and treatment of our clients with these symptoms. During your initial assessment the clinician you see will take a detailed history and background regarding the presentation of your pain. This will often include a neurological assessment and screening process to ensure there are no concerning features present alongside your pain. Once this is completed, management can include rehabilitation strategies such as tailored exercise routines, manual therapy and acupuncture.
