What is Shoulder Pain?

The shoulder is considered to me one of the more complex regions in the body. Primarily this is down to the fact that it is made up of four different joints which all permit varying degrees of movement. The primary articulation is the glenohumeral joint. This ‘ball and socket’ joint allows a basis for our arms to move in a variety of different directions in order to meet the demands of our sport, work and general activities of daily living.

Due to the mobility permitted, the shoulder is an area that relies heavily on soft tissues to stabilise it. One of the most common injuries is to a group of muscles called the ‘rotator cuff.’ Their role is to support the arm, acting like a ‘claw’ to facilitate movement when lifting, carrying or bearing weight through the arm – it is often through trauma, repetition, degeneration or excessive load.
